Federer through to the second round after straight set win in Halle

Roger Federer won his 52nd match at Halle open defeating 6-4, 7-6(3) over German Jan-Lennard Struff. The first round contest was just Federer’s 19th match of the season as he’s struggled with a back injury and endured knee surgery in February.

Federer took a break in 7th game during the first set and won the first set 6-4. In the second set both players held the serve and match went to the tie break and federer took the tie break , set and won the match by 7-6 (3) and reached the second round of Halle open for the 14th time. Federer never faced a break point and fired 15 aces to reach the second round.

17 times GS champion who was playing just 19th match of the season was looking a lot better after going through a series of injuries this year. He had rhythm issues at Stuttgart, but the more he plays, the more he can iron out these issues. Although an improvement in rhythm was apparent in today’s match.

Top seed Federer will bid to reach his 14th quarter-final in as many appearances in the German city. Federer next will face Tunisian Malek Jaziri. The World No. 3 won their previous meeting in three sets at the 2013 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. He will also look to win his 9th Halle title.
