What if we get to see some of the tennis legends from various eras battle it out on the court? That’s what’s exactly on the cards come September 2017. In honour of the tennis great Rod Laver, this tournament, just like the Ryder Cup in golf, has been named after him.
Laver Cup was first announced in January, and the format was announced recently. A team of European players will face off against a group from the rest of the world Sept. 22-24, 2017, in Prague. Each team will have six players, with competition featuring three singles matches and one doubles match each day.
Former rivals Bjorn Borg (Europe) and John McEnroe (World team) were announced as captains.
With a combined 31 major titles, Rafael Nadal and Roger have committed to the inaugural event. Federer and Nadal will play doubles together at the inaugural event and both the players expressed their excitement towards each other.
Federer said, “It’s going to be absolutely unbelievable to be on the same side of the net as Rafa, finally. Rather than always facing that big forehand, now I can actually support it and say ‘hit one more’ and take a lot of joy out of it.” “I see this as a no-brainer,” Roger added. “Why not spend an interesting, cool, fun weekend with all the best players in the world?”
Nadal said, “It’s going to be a very special feeling to be on the same team as Roger. We have been rivals for all our careers, so to be on the same team and even play doubles together will be very, very special.
It will surely be a huge treat to see all the legends of a by-gone era play with the current legends of the sport and bring much excitement and buzz to the fore. We cannot wait for September 2017 to roll on fast!
