Day 1 : Wimbledon Highlights
Wimbledon has begun! The first day was action-packed as well as one with record making and breaking. The top seeds went through while there were a few upsets too. This was a day of history making too.
- Federer beat Guido Pella to win his 1st round match 7-6, 7-6, 6-3, which was also his 80th win at Wimbledon, to advance to the 2nd round; all the while accomplishing a record of 4000 winners at Wimbledon. He was made to work in the first 2 sets but he came up on top and played brilliantly.
- Marcus Willis, the world number 772, beat 6-3 6-3 6-4 over 54th-ranked Ricardas Berankis and will play against Roger Federer next. His is a true story of inspiration, as he, being a tennis coach who earns £30 an hour, came into the main draw from winning some gruelling qualifying rounds and reaching the 2nd round.
- Novak Djokovic won his match against Ward in straight sets, winning his 29th Grand Slam match in a row and equalling the men’s singles Open era record set by Rod Laver from 1969 to 1970.
- 36 year old Venus Williams kicked off her 19th Wimbledon with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Donna Vekic.
- Ekaterina Alexandrova upset Ana Ivanovic in the first round of Wimbledon; winning in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.
- 17th seed Gael Monfils lost to Jeremy Chardy in 5 sets 6-7, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
- Kyle Edmund lost in first round to Adrian Mannarino; Edmund lost all 12 of his men’s singles sets at SW19.
- Belgian 11th seed David Goffin has ended the hopes of Britain’s Alexander Ward as he records a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win.
- After 3 hours 21 minutes, Sam Querrey beat Lukas Rosol 6-7, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 and 12-10
- In another five setter, Denis Istomin downed 20th seed Kevin Anderson 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 in 3 hours 35 minutes.
- Grigor Dimitrov won his first round with ease beating Bjorn Fratangelo 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
- Kei Nishikori beat Sam Groth 6-4, 6-3, 7-6
- Gilles Simon finally beat Janko Tipsarevic, beating the stout Serbian 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3
- Alize Cornet beat Polona Hercog 6-3, 6-0,
- Angelique Kerber ended Laura Robson’s hopes in the 1R, winning 6-2 6-2
- Nicolas Mahut beat Britain’s Brydan Klein easily enough, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.
- Simona Halep is safely into the second round. She beat Anna Schmiedlova 6-4, 6-1.
- Garbine Muguruza has passed a very tough test for a first-round match against Camila Giorgi, 6-2 5-7, 7-4.
